Three steps to send your proof.
- 1
Have your insurance letter ready
It should show your name, coverage start date, and monthly premium. Add payment proof if requested.
- 2
Upload it to BenefitsCal
Log in, choose your Medi-Cal case, and select Upload Documents.
Show the exact clicks
- Choose Medical Expense if offered. If the labels differ, ask your county which type to use.
- Select your complete insurance letter and any requested payment proof.
- Check the case and files, then choose Upload Document or Submit.
- Look for Upload Successful. Save or print the receipt.
- 3
Ask the county to review it
Ask your worker to recalculate your share of cost and confirm the new amount and start month in writing.
Uploading does not approve a change. Keep your confirmation.
Official help & IHSS paperwork
Menu names can vary. BenefitsCal upload help ↗ (opens in a new tab) · Confirmation FAQs ↗ (opens in a new tab)
IHSS forms may need to go to your IHSS office separately. See the LA County IHSS guide or find your county IHSS office ↗ (opens in a new tab).
Build a small, clear packet
Start with the county’s request. Gather only what it asks for. For an insurance premium review, ask whether it needs proof of the premium, payment, and coverage start date.
Make every page easy to read. Include the page that shows the person’s name and the page that shows the amount. Check that the photo has all four corners and no glare.
Choose the correct destination
BenefitsCal has an online document upload tool for county benefits cases. An IHSS form may need to go to a separate IHSS office; do not assume a Medi-Cal upload reaches that office.
Tell the worker what you need
Use a short cover message like this. Add private case details only inside the official channel.
Please review my Medi-Cal share of cost using the attached insurance premium and payment proof. Please tell me what else you need and the month any change can start. Please send the calculation and decision in writing.
Save proof that you sent it
Keep the upload confirmation or fax receipt. Note the date and the documents included. A successful upload means the papers were sent; it does not mean the review was approved.
Follow up with a specific question
Ask: “Did the documents arrive in my case? Is anything missing? When should I check back?” If you disagree with the new decision, read the appeal instructions on the notice promptly.
Common questions
Will a new policy fix earlier months?
Do not assume so. A policy has its own coverage start date. Ask the county which months can be reviewed and what proof it needs. Buying coverage now does not automatically erase an earlier share of cost.
What if the county’s decision looks wrong?
Ask for the calculation in writing. Check the appeal instructions and deadline on your Notice of Action. Seek help promptly from a benefits counselor or legal aid organization; do not let a deadline pass while waiting for an informal reply.
Check the sources
Start with the official rules. Ask your county how they apply to you.
